When you travel to a city, locally or internationally, you should always ask the locals where the best views are (and where are the best restaurants, best places to visit…). In this article a Sydney photographer speaks out: these are his top 10 Sydney views.

1. Lavender Bay and McMahon’s Point, North Sydney

Lavender Bay and MacMachon’s point is located on the lower North Shore of Sydney, just a stone’s throw away from the world famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. Also within walking distance is Luna Park (a small theme park by the harbour). You can walk to these places from the nearest train station which is Milson’s Point.

2. Sydney Harbour Cruise

Organize a harbour cruise when you get to Sydney. You can have a romantic dinner in the evening or a daytime adventure. One of the most popular routes is to catch a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly.

3. The Rocks, Sydney

The Rocks is located at the foot of the southern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is a historical place with many old buildings. This area is famous for weekly night markets and their pubs and beer gardens.

4. Observatory Hill, The Rocks

Observatory Hill is a secluded place, with a nice small park from which you can observe the cars on the Sydney Harbour Bridge zooming by. On the hill is also an astronomical observatory where you can visit at night and view the night sky from their telescopes.

5. Royal Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney is located East of the Sydney CBD, just beside the State Library and State Parliament and behind the Sydney Opera House. A beautiful place to take a time out from exploring the city.

6. Kirribilli, Milson’s Point

Kirribilli is very close to Lavender Bay, and you can get to this location by catching a train to Milson’s Point. Kirribilli has a nice intimate view of the city. Make sure you buy some fish and chips or a meat pie from the shops and have lunch by the harbour.

7. Mrs Macquarie’s Chair

Mrs Macquarie’s Chair is located to the north of the Sydney Royal Botanical Gardens and East of the Sydney Opera House. At this particular location, you can get the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge in one frame with your camera.

8. Sydney North Head, North Shore

The North Head is more spectacular than the South Head in Sydney: You can see the city at both locations. But what is really impressive are the cliffs and the sheer drop from the viewing point.

9. Center Point Tower Sydney

Center Point is the tallest building in the Sydney CBD. You can go there for a visit or go dine at the revolving restaurant.

10. Bondi Beach

Watch the sunrise at Bondi Beach. Or during Summer, enjoy the beach and the lovely view of the ocean, the cliffs and the people.
